Āsana is derived from the sanskrit verbal root ās, which in this instance refers "to sit". The -ana ending turns the verb into an action noun, making āsana which for our purposes translates to sitting or posture. When you hear the sanskrit names for poses you'll almost always hear āsana at the end (think
trikoṇāsana (triangle pose) or
chaturaṅga daṇḍāsana).
